It will also be Gotham FC’s first NWSL regular-season match played within the five boroughs.
The historic setting adds another layer to an already compelling matchup. Both Teams will meet for the first time since the 2025 NWSL Championship, where Gotham secured the league title with a dramatic 1-0 victory.
Gotham enters Wednesday’s contest with a 7-3-3 record and 24 points, placing the club fourth in the NWSL standings.
The team continued its strong run of form Friday night with a 3-1 road victory over the Utah Royals. Esther González led the attack with two goals, while defender Tierna Davidson added her second goal of the season.
The result carried additional historical significance for Gotham, marking the club’s 100th regular-season victory.
Gotham has now earned six wins over its previous eight league matches, producing a 6-1-1 record during that stretch. The recent run has helped the defending champions climb the standings while establishing momentum ahead of one of the most visible games of the NWSL season.
González remains an important part of that success.
Her two-goal performance against Utah was the eighth brace of her NWSL regular-season career. Two of those multi-goal games have come against Washington, including one at home in 2023 and another on the road in 2025.
She is one of only four players in league history to record multiple regular-season braces against the Spirit. The other three are Jess McDonald, Marta and Alex Morgan.
Washington enters The Queens Classic with an 8-2-3 record and 27 points, sitting three points ahead of Gotham in the standings.
The Spirit have been one of the league’s strongest teams in recent weeks. Washington has won three consecutive matches and eight of its last nine appearances.
Its most recent victory came Saturday in a 2-0 result against the North Carolina Courage.
Leicy Santos and Trinity Rodman provided the goals, while goalkeeper Sandy MacIver earned her seventh shutout of the season.
Washington’s combination of attacking talent and defensive consistency presents a major challenge for Gotham. However, the New York-area club has enjoyed considerable success against the Spirit during its recent meetings.
The Queens Classic will be the first matchup between the two clubs since Gotham defeated Washington in the 2025 NWSL Championship.
That title game remained scoreless until the 80th minute, when Rose Lavelle delivered the decisive goal and lifted Gotham to its second league championship in three seasons.
Although Washington owns a narrow advantage in the overall series, leading 17-15-12 across all competitions, Gotham controlled the matchup throughout 2025.
Gotham went unbeaten in four meetings against the Spirit last season, recording two victories and two draws across all competitions.
The club’s defense has been particularly effective in the series. Gotham has not allowed a goal in its last four matches against Washington.
A fifth consecutive shutout would establish a new league benchmark, as no team has ever kept five straight clean sheets against the Spirit.
Wednesday’s game will also be the 45th meeting between Gotham and Washington across all competitions. That total ties the Seattle Reign FC-Portland Thorns FC rivalry as the most frequently played matchup in NWSL history.
Despite their familiarity, the clubs have competed in a variety of locations. Citi Field will become the 10th different venue used during the all-time series and the fifth different stadium to host the teams’ last five meetings.
Gotham has proven difficult to defeat at home.
The club has lost only once in its last 14 home matches across all competitions, posting six wins, seven draws and one defeat during that period.
Gotham has conceded only seven goals throughout that run and has recorded nine clean sheets.
That defensive record will be tested by a Washington attack featuring players such as Rodman and Santos. At the opposite end, the Spirit must find a way to contain González and a Gotham offense that scored three times in its latest performance.
The matchup features two championship contenders with recent winning streaks, elite international talent and a growing history of high-stakes meetings.
